Appeal to leaders of BASNET partner institutions

Dear Colleagues,

BASNET was established as a European Commission FP6 project for the creation of a BalticStates strategy to ncrease the participation of women in Science and High Technology. The partners of BASNET were Ministries of Education and Science from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and main universities in the Baltic States region - University of Latvia, Tartu University, Vilnius University and Kaunas Technological University. Among BASNET partners there were also research institutions represented by Vilnius University Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy as well as collaborators from Poland and Romania - the Polish Physical Society and the University of Bucharest.

Based on sociological study and the specificities of national research policies targeted at measuring gender differences, and good practices in the field from other countries BASNET strategy for Women in Science and Higher Technology for the Baltic States region was created. In 2007 BASNET became a full conditional member of the prestigous women‘s organisation, the European Platform of Women Scientists (EPWS) thus gaining the opportunity to influence European Science policy. 5-7 of June 2008 the annual EPWS Conference “Women Shaping Science“ and General Assembly was organised by EPWS in collaboration with BASNET in Vilnius.

Activities of BASNET team was highly evaluated by EC. The large delegation of BASNET project partner representatives and Human resource managers from partner universities have been invited by European Commission to attend the conference „Changing research landscapes to make the most of human potential“ 10 years of EU activities in «Women and Science», and BEYOND held 15-16 of May 2009 in Praque. The conference, was hosted by the Czech Presidency and the European Commission.

The unique network of scientists and policy-makers meant institutional barriers could be overcome and allowed for a better framwork within which the needs of women scientists could be met. In order to ensure the continuation of the main project tasks, it was decided to establish the Association BASNET Forumas. With the support of EC the association have been established 16 of December 2008 in Lithuania on the basis of institutions-Lithuanian BASNET partners. The mission of BASNET Forumas is the monitoring of the implementation of the BASNET strategy in the Baltic States region and disemination good practices in the Eastern European countries. 16 of March 2009 BASNET Forumas association became a full member of EPWS.

To continue BASNET activities all institutions BASNET project partners are kindly invited to join BASNET Forumas. Moreover that recently BASNET Forumas start its activity as a partner of National Lithuanian project targeted to change political landscape for Women in Sciences in Lithuania. Your support and good practices are appreciated very much!
